Cypres Mulch ok to use?

zhenchok May 13, 2004 02:04 PM

I heard that it can carry mites. A local store sells it by the bag. I just wanted to know if it's safe to use. Thanks, Dave.

Cypress mulch is excellent as it holds moisture very well, hence raising humidity levels. I would recommend getting a can of provent-a-mite and spraying the substrate beforehand.

The only way it will have snake mites, is if you put a snake(s) that have mites in it. It works great.

How about aspen over cypress? Its drier but nothing a little misting wont cure. Anyone else have an opinion?>

Aspen is great if you can keep the humidity right. Here in PA over the winter running a heater dries out the air too much, and when I mist Aspen it molds too quick. Other than the humidity issue, (for me) I love Aspen. I am trying out Carefresh again, and if it dont mold too quick from misting, I'm gonna stick with it.

Cypress mulch is great to use because of the humidity thing. It does not harbor snake mites but can have some natural occuring larvae in it that hatch out as white mites but are harmless to snakes. I use it and it's fine.

i was using aspen but ran into problems with mold and i also found that my balls wouldnt eat as well. i was using vision cages and with heat tape for belly heat. i also had a flourescent light on each cage. i think the brightness was affecting them. as soon as i switched to the much darker cypress i have had no feeding problems. my humidity never drops below 45 % and with just a light misting every other day it stays at 60%. the feeding thing could just be coinsidence but what ever keeps them feeding i will do. i have never had any bugs that i have noticed. i do get little ants occasionally but i think they come from my house. i live in south florida and they are everywhere.i dont think i will use anything but cypress until it is proven to be bad.
