Milestones

Markus Jayne May 13, 2004 04:59 PM

Today I reached another milestone. However small...it was still a milestone. A female that I hatched out from a breeding I did 2 1/2 years ago, laid her first clutch of eggs. There were 5 in total and all perfect. It's kinda like coming full circle.

So I ask you...what have been some of your milestones. Your greatest accomplishments? Your proudest moments?

Raising King cobras from hatchlings (3 days old), and breeding them 4 years later. Those 18-24" banded babies are beautiful popping out of the eggs.

Congratulations on the full circle experience. I know how fun that can be. I had a similar experience last year.

I bought my first female ball python (CH) in 1992. She laid 8 eggs in 1994. I kept back one of the males from that clutch. I bought a CBB ball python female in 1994 that I raised up and bred several times. I bred the son of the first female to this second girl and got a clutch of 10 eggs in 2000. One of her daughters from 2000 was a great eater and a pretty ringer too. She ate like a champ and bred to a pastel male in 2002. She laid her first clutch of 6 eggs on her third birthday in 2003. For some reason, this was more exciting to me than any other clutch I had previously hatched out. There is truly something rewarding about coming full circle and creating your own bloodlines that grow up and produce more beautiful snakes.

Thanks for sharing Marcus!

I also like the multi generational milestones and consider them a big deal. I still have a lone corn snake just because he was the fruit of years of work.

I enjoy watching traits get passed down generations like an odd head pattern that gets changed a little along the way but still stands out or even a bad trait like ill temperament. Last summer I got my first 2nd generation ball python clutches. I was excited before I saw that the only two surviving eggs in the first clutch contained albinos (from 66% het X 50% het) but unfortunately they weren’t quite right and didn't make it. A 2nd clutch from a sister produced a normal looking girl who is now well on her way to producing yet another generation. At one time I even owned her great grandmother (wish I had kept her for a 4 generation picture or perhaps 5 generations next year).

My daughters........intelligent (both A honor roll students), respectful and courteous (always sir and mam when addressed by an adult), obedient and well-behaved (they know what and what not to do and can and can not do).......over-all great kids!

They should teach me..........

I had a female I hatched more than four years ago lay a clutch of eggs last season that was the result of being bred by my albino male. Five hatched! I was pretty happy about that for her first breeding trial. But, that was not my milestone in herps...

>>So I ask you...what have been some of your milestones. Your greatest accomplishments? Your proudest moments?

When I came back from vending at Daytona 2002 I had the following baby (PIC) in a tortoise incubator. It was the result of breeding two CBB Pancakes I hatched back in the late 90's. Bottom line: I literally FLIPPED my lid! I could not have been happier since I was finally able to produce a 'true' F2 offspring from my CBB adults. Bottom line: I was able to go full cirle too and ensure that after my WC animals eventually passed on, I would have productive CBB animals. Since then, the dam of the first F2 production has produced more babies and hopefully ensured her place as a long term CBB breeder for my Pancake colony.

Thanks Sean! I'll actually have a few F2 babies from this same CBB mother in Daytona. She has become quite the producer. Hey, you gonna sell me some Ball morphs CHEAP this year? Hahaha...
