Will this light be ok?

jodi82 May 13, 2004 06:17 PM

I know how much the ReptiSun is talked about here and how good it is...but the cheapest light&fixture I found is below

http://www.petsmart.com/global/product_detail.jsp?PRODUCTprd_id=845524441780323&FOLDERfolder_id=2534374302030051&ASSORTMENTast_id=2534374302023694&bmUID=1084489307943

will this be ok?

your link doesn't work. You can get the Reptisun 5.0 from reptile depot for $19 (member) or $21 (non-member) any size. They are ridiculously expensive in pet stores! I have seen them from $36-$48! Absurd. Even with shipping, online is cheaper. If you order look to see if there are other things you can order at the same time b/c their s&h is one set price. I think reptiledirect.com is inexpensive too but don't know about their shipping fees. Don't skimp on lighting

ive heard that te power sun is ok but that light puts out heat so depends on the size of the cage

i dunno why the link didn't work. heres the info below...

ESU Reptile Slimline Light Strip

Now you can have high-quality, ESU Reptile fluorescent lighting in a convenient, ready-to-use fixture. It's compact, lightweight and easy to install. The Super UV lamp simulates natural daylight and produces the appropriate UVA and UVB rays for calcium absorption and bone growth in reptiles

The reason i like it is cuz it's the bulb and fixture, and it's the cheapest i found.

opps i cut and pasted i was looking at the powersun bulb lol
so disregard last post srry

yes, that ESU light will be fine. I have two of them, with a regular plant light and my panther is always moving. His cage is 4x4x3, so I need a lot of light to fill it. The ESU is 7.0 UVB, so I wouldnt use two unless your enclosure is big enough.

Hi Jodi,

Save your money on the fixture. Go to Home Depot or Lowes and buy their 24" light fixture for $12.00. Go to www.petguys.com and buy the Repti-Glo 8.0 bulb for another $13.00 and you're done. If your cage is bigger than 24", get a larger fixture and bulb. No need to get specialized equipment that costs and arm and a leg. If you prefer the Reptisun to the Repti-glo, check petguys or www.lllreptile.com, they always run specials on them. I use all Repti-sun 8.0's on my cages in 48" sizes and they have worked very well and lasted the better part of a year.

Hope this helps.
