Just got my Gecko today!!!

terrible_one May 13, 2004 07:10 PM

Ok guys I finally got my 1st Leopard Gecko today!! I got him at my local PetCo..I know some are bad, but this one had really nice ones. He is a normal and a little baby. So anyway I will probably be asking a lot of questions but I am real happy. Thanks to all you people on AOL that helped me!

Right now I have a UV Daylight bulb(i know its not required) on the UTH side. The at night I am leaving the UTH on and turing on a red night bulb (50watts) I have about 5 mealworms in there and I am going to add a cricket or 2 tonight..sound good?

When I first put him in his new home he ran into a hide now he is out but just chillen under a tree and not really moving..i take it hes just geting used to the place right?

Well I guess that all for now if you want to talk to me on AOL my sn Jkidd2kmart056

Thanks..c ya

if you have a UTH i would suggest returning all the bulbs (except the red one if you wanna night view) and buying a thermostat. also post pics.

Well will the UV light hurt it beacuase I really cannot take it back? It seems to be hiding a lot from it...Also it is a bay and does the mealworms have to be alive? The guy at the pet-store said to cut off there heads and I did butt hey are dead now..Also I bought terrium moss for a humid hide can i put that in a dish?

Hey man, like i've told you before, leos don't need UV lighting because they're nocturnal. I don't know if it will neccesarily hurt them, but too much vitamin D from the UV light could do some harm. I would most definately keep the mealworms alive, I've heard of people cutting the heads off but only when their leos haven't been eating for weeks. Just leave them alive, because leos will usually only attack stuff that is moving. they are opportunistic hunters, they hide and wait for somethign to crawl in front of them, then they jump out and ambush it. and to be honest, i'd just get rid of the UV bulb all together. just talk to your dad about it or offer to pay for it or whatever, it would probably do more harm than good, especially since leos love the dark. Anyways, Congrats on your leo, i'm sure w'ell talk on AIM some later.

although its not too likely to do any good either. If he by chance happens to bask under it will cause his body to produce vitamin D3, and will brighten his colors...however since he hides from it will probably do very little to no good.

Leopard Geckos are nocturnal so their eyes and skin are not adapted to UV light... it can hurt their eyes and cause them to not see very well. Your new gecko will want to hide for awhile until it feels comfortable and safe in it's new environment, so it's best to just leave it alone for a few days. Don't be suprised if it doesn't want to eat right away either, and usually they will not be interested in food items that are not moving. Good luck!

I don't understand why they would tell you to cut off it's head. All of my leos eat them alive. I've heard that if you want to feed them superworms then you might should cut their head off, but not a regular mealworm.
