Question for NJ herpers, or........

Alan Garry Jun 16, 2003 10:03 PM

Question about black rats from NJ. I have read on this forum a few times in the past that NJ black rats are quite black. Is this pretty consistent, or do they vary somewhat? I have a snake that I purchased as a NJ black rat, from someone in NJ who didn't produce the clutch himself. This snake is close to 2 years old, and a full 3 feet long, still having a lot of pattern. She has black blotches, light grey ground color with dark grey mottling that is noticeably lighter than the blotches, visable head pattern, and a slight hint of red between some of the scales. She also seems to be a little stouter, also having a slightly larger head than blacks from southeastern NY, and CT that I have in my collection. Does this sound familiar for that area. Thanks in advance.

I've seen a couple of them this spring and Yes here in south jersey they are black. One of the 2 of the 5 that I have seen so far where patterened but with plenty black. Nice sized to about 4 ft.

The one in front is the NJ and the one in back in NC.
I really like the Jersey female, she has white pattern but lots of black.

Nice snakes. Thanks for the pics Don. Did you raise them from hatchlings? If so, how big was the NJ female when she attained her adult coloring? My female is about 3' and she kind of looks like an anerythristic Texas rat, but with more dark pigment on her ventrals.
Take care. Alan,
