out of hibernation at last

jack May 14, 2004 06:46 AM

I have 3 easter box turtles. The 2 females come out of hibernation 6 weeks ago. The male just came out yesterday. This is the same evey year. I hibernate them outside. Is this normal the male is always the fist to go into hibernation and is always weeks behind in coming out?

I've had my box turtles now 9 years and have decided there is no way to predict any behavior. Just when you think you have a pattern figured out they change totally. In previous years my male 3 toed cross has always been up first and very anxious for his ladies to wake up and usually he decides to assist them in waking up. Then my ornates are the last to get up by a big margin but this year everyone got up within 2 days of each other and all have been active, mating, eating, etc. Also found it interesting that my ornates just dug holes in the yard and hibernated basically in the open within a couple feet of each other and other three (cross and gulf coast females) hibernated in their houses. Go figure. They certainly are complex and very interesting critters. Mary Beth
