Question for those who have tile:

jananicole66 May 14, 2004 07:53 AM

Hello!
Yesterday I royally spoiled Aries. She was ina 10 gallon and i could tell going nuts, all she did was climb the side of her cage, and try to get to the highest part posible on her log, looking longingly at the top. So, I bought her a nice big cage. It's a 25 gallon, 30 inches long, 12 deep, 16 high. She's not in it yet, but its being set up.
Now, my issue is that I put tile in the bottom, the ceramic stuff you can get at Home Depot. It's not too thick, about 1/4 of an inch or so. I got a new UTH (11.5x10 inches) and put it in, but it only seems to be heating the one tile thats directly over it.. the other 1 and a half dont seem to have any of the heat, though they are touching.. anyone else have this problem? what do you do, just put on a 50W bulb to make the other ones warm????
Any feedback would be lovely, so I can get my little spoiled gecko into her new home ASAP
Thanks

You are spoiling your gecko for sure hehe, wonderful!!! Now as for the tile.....what i've noticed about under tank heaters is that they may say, for example, they are 6"x8" when in fact the heating elements are only say 5"x7". The entire surface area of the pad isn't going to heat up. I use the 11"x17" Exo Terra heat pads and i'm thrilled with them.....(i've used them in my two 40 gal tanks and my 22 gal tank). The surface area seems to be more and i can see the elements so that helps. I use ceramic tiles in all of my tanks and where the heating elements are the tiles do heat up.

Just yesterday i found that i did have an extra heat pad (11x17) around (pays to clean up a bit hehehe). So i placed it in the middle on the bottom of my 22 gal tank and put in a divider. Each of my two AFT's have their own side now. (((i gotta remember to take pics of it))). I love the way its setup. This tank only fits 3 12x12 tiles so the middle one heats up completely while the outter two heat up on the side thats next to the middle tile.

It didn't take long for it to heat up either (i use a rheostat with all my under tank heaters). They seem to be enjoying their new homes.

Hope that helps

Hi!
Thanks for replying.
I actually have a small uth for my 10 gallon, soi may put that in the middle of the tank, in addition to the 11x7. I also bought a 25watt bulbso that may do the trick.
The temps on the hottest part are like 88, and the lowest is like 68-70 so not good!
