Question for those who use tile as a substrate:

jananicole66 May 14, 2004 07:59 AM

Hello!
Yesterday I royally spoiled Aries. She was ina 10 gallon and i could tell going nuts, all she did was climb the side of her cage, and try to get to the highest part posible on her log, looking longingly at the top. So, I bought her a nice big cage. It's a 25 gallon, 30 inches long, 12 deep, 16 high. She's not in it yet, but its being set up.
Now, my issue is that I put tile in the bottom, the ceramic stuff you can get at Home Depot. It's not too thick, about 1/4 of an inch or so. I got a new UTH (11.5x10 inches) and put it in, but it only seems to be heating the one tile thats directly over it.. the other 1 and a half dont seem to have any of the heat, though they are touching.. anyone else have this problem? what do you do, just put on a 50W bulb to make the other ones warm????
Any feedback would be lovely, so I can get my little spoiled gecko into her new home ASAP
Thanks

I use tile as well on many of my cages and have the same issue. Moving the bulb farther away seems to let the heat distribute better instead of creating that "spotlight" effect. Try that.

Hi! Thanks for responding.
I actually seem to have solved the problem.. I carefully peeled off the smaller UTH from my 10 gallon and stuck it under the second tile, so now the two full tiles have heat.. and it is a temp gradient as well, since the smaller UTH doesnt give off as much heat as the larger one..
Hopefully this will no longer be a problem!
Thanks
