Corn Snakes

ReptileZ May 14, 2004 09:47 AM

I recently found a female corn snake in the small town i live in, where I haven't seen but about 4 in the last 24 years of living here. Anyway, I'm interested in finding this new girl a mate from local bloodlines for breeding purposes.

I found this corn snake when i was walking down the road around 8pm. I'm wondering what's the best way to find corn snakes in the wild. What's the best places to look. What's the best times to look, etc.

Thanks

That's exactly what I was thinking..lol!
Use your own experience.
It was cool and safe for the snake to move so go with that on another day..

Make sure that little guy does well in captivity. If it does and you really want to find it a mate, have it sexed and order a mate from a breeder. There are many MANY corns produced in captivity (too many?....matter of opinion, but shows these days have tanks with BILLIONS in them :0...are they all sold?. So they are easy to get hold of, and it gives a lucky one a home. Best of luck and good find.

I sexed it right after I got it, and it's a female. She's eating appx every 3 days (slightly smaller pinks than normal), is 19" long, and has been panacured. Now, she's shedding. It's appx her 20th day in captivity now. I think she'll be fine though.. just gotta wait and see.

I'm mainly interested in seeing how this one turns out as an adult, as far as colors and such, because corn snakes from this area/local aren't even in the pet trade yet. If they aren't different, it probably wouldn't be worth getting another one from this local from the wild, and if they are different, it probably wouldn't be worth getting someone's miami or okeetee corn and messing up the local bloodlines.

At any rate, as long as it does well, it'll be a cool pet.

Several Methods I guess...
1. Cruise the area of roads at night where you found your corn snake. If the temps are really hot, cruise later at night. If they are moderate, start at dusk and cruise till midnight.
2. If cruising doesn't produce one, or you are adventurous try finding some spots to flip tin or trash. I am a lazy observer so flipping is usually last on my list. But, it is productive. Just remember to get permission if you are going on private property.
3. You can try to post and find someone who has some from your area or county.
Good luck,
Steven O.
