Timber Rattlesnake Bit Dog-Treating at VMTH

mrwenninger Jun 16, 2003 10:24 PM

I am a fourth year veterinary medical student at the University of Wisconsin School of Veterinary Medicine. I am currently treating a dog that was bitten on the right cheek by a timber rattlesnake. I took the case because I want to work with reptiles following school (7 years done-I will be a vet in May 2004). Anyway, he has thrombocytopenia (29,000 platelets) secondary to envenomation. His aPTT and PT (clotting times) are normal but he has ecchymotic hemmorhages covering a large portion of his body. He also has pitting edema in his forelimbs and is painful in the bite region. Any suggestions as to treatment or people to contact regarding therapy would be greatly appreciated. Please email me at mrwenninger@hotmail.com with any suggestions. Thank you for your time.

Treat it the same as you would if this was from say a car accident. The venom is probably done spreading, and even if it isn't theres little that can be done.
