ATBs in the smae cage

snakeman2004 May 14, 2004 12:48 PM

I have a female ATB, adn I was thinking of getting another one. Can they be kept together, so long as they are about the same size, or do I need another enclosure?

Hi, You can keep them together alot of keeper's do but I
would use another enclosure. They should be kept seperate
for quarantine reason's.The only plus-side for keeping
snake's together is saving cage space !The only time I
would keep them together would be for breeding. In nature
Snake's are loner's that's why I keep all my snake's seper-
ate in captivity I think they prefer it that way.It also
make's everything easy'er cage-cleaning feeding keeping
track of stool's for parasite's, that way you know who's
doing what.

I mean there are plenty of reasons why you should house separately like the previous post stated. I house mine together year around and many people do. These are pretty easy snake to work with and to breed and pretty much everything. I would feed separately and that can be a pain to remove one while feeding the other (not many people like to hold ATB's for you and you all know why). I think its kind of cute when the curl up on a branch together or both try and bite me at the same time when I open the cage to clean or change water. As long as they are pretty similar in size you should have no problems. Just make sure you know where your animals are coming from...you always run a risk of hurting other animals if you introduce a sick one. Also, despite what many people may think...you actually need a larger cage to house two in a cage than the size of two cages to house separately. So it doesn't do as much good as you may think. If you house them together you SHOULD have no problems, just be careful.

Thanks for the replies. Am I understanding you correctly? It seems that you are saying that I will need a cage more than double the size of a cage large enough for one, in order to house two.

And yes, we all know they have wonderful personalities. LOL

I actually do handle mine, and she's cool MOST of the time, but I wear gloves, anyway. She bites 'em every now and again... And, even when she's being "nice," she has a sinister presence about her...

Yes, thats the case with most snakes. But as long as you provide a lot of climbing room and branches you can likely get away with something smaller than you would with most of your terrestrial snakes. At least with tree boas they can go on different planes of the tank and don't have to share the floor cage space. I wouldn't even worry too much about that part of the post...you should be fine. How big are they now and what do you have them in?

I only have one, currently. I was considering getting another one, but I don't have a whole lot of space, and I was really hoping to avoid running another humidifier and mister. The one I currently own is probably a little over 3' long, and still very narrow (eating fuzzies, but might be about ready to move up in size). I have her in a tank which is probably about 2'x18'x14'. You can see pictures if you look at my gallery.

I know I'll need to keep the other one in something else for a while (for quarantine), but I figured I could mist it with a sprayer in the mean time, and keep it real simple till I'm sure it is disease free...Then I would introduce them to each other, and keep my hands out of the way....

sounds like you have a 20 gallon tank. Sure you can use another tank and use a spray bottle. still feed them separate too. You can puth them in that for a little bit but a 20 gallon is not enough for anything but babies..sounds like yours is young but it will grow out of that very quickly and with another one in there you are looking at getting a larger cage anyway...i would get a big one now and use the 20 gallon size tank for quarantine and feeding.
