Death of a female ambilobe.

sea_in_the_city May 14, 2004 01:32 PM

I introduced my female blue bar ambilobe to Alkabides 2 days ago. She was VERY unreceptive. He was extremely interested, but I didn't let any contact be made. I put her back in her cage and she went right back to drinking as if nothing happened. She didn't eat the following day, just chalked it up to a little stress. I watered her and misted her this morning and she seemed fine. I came back a few hours later and she was dead on the bottom, tongue out. I only recieved her about 2 weeks ago. I put her in a ziplock and put her in the freezer for later examination. Is it possible she was eggbound/gravid ? I think she was a virgin, only about 10 months old. I'll look later when I have the chance. Not that it'll be easy cutting open my pet, but the scientist in me wants to know. I'm really disappointed. Silk with her eye infection, and now this. Everyone else seems to be doing really well. My boys are eating anoles like crazy (about 1 a day), crickets, silkworms, and I now have praying mantis hatchlings. My baby girl from Kammerflage Kreations is doing well. She eats 3-5 2/3 size crickets a day and is only 3-4 months old. Peanut my female veiled is dong well, but I'm not sure if she's pregnant or not. She was bred, but stopped after about 30 seconds. This past Tuesday was 28 days, it's now 31 days. Nothing yet. Her colors are slightly bluer, but nothing most people would see, unless they know her. She isn't obviously gravid. My wild caught female ambanja couldn't be happier. She eats like a cow, and is almost the size of one. She's bigger than my male. She weighs almost 200 grams. She eats about 12 crickets a day, but doesn't really care for anything else. Anyways, just needed to unload. Thanks for listening everyone....

Hi,

You may be missing some clues as to why your female died. Its rare that a chameleon will drop dead without warning in just a few hours. Unless an accident occured, I think there may have been some factors leading up to this. Can you give more detail about her enclosure, husbandry, cage placement etc.

Eggbound females will usually go through quite a bit before dropping dead. Alot of the symtoms are also obvious.

I don't know if I misread this, but do you feed your chams anolis? Like the little lizard? I've never heard of that before, good idea, i guess.

sea_in_the_city May 14, 2004 08:31 PM

Yes. Anolis segrii. There's tons of em around here. I stick to the smaller females though. My male panthers are really big.

Hey Vincent. I'm telling you man, it was really wierd. I'm very anal about paying close attention to my animals. She was a little lighter in color than normal this morning, but nothing that was THAT out of the ordinary. She drank too. I have 6 other chams that are all fine (except Silk, but she seems to be on the rebound I hope- I think that was stress due to shipping). Her enclosure is the same as all my females' - 18"x24"x 32"high total living space. screen on all sides, outside on my screened porch (with a roof)-day temps of 85 and night temps of 65-70. Gut loaded crickets, and silkworms she was on. When I introduced her to Alkabides 2 days ago, she wasn't just disinterested, she was pissed!!! That's what made me think she might be already gravid, but coloration wasn't really indicative of that. She get's one gallon of RO water dripped over her leaves for 6-8 hours, the same as all the rest. I mist all the cages with the same water in the morning to simulate morning dew. There is a 40 watt basking lamp and a 30 watt 5.0 UVB flo bulb over the top of each of the cages. All the cages get about 3 hours of dappled sunlight in the late afternoon through the trees. I'm at a loss.

NO!!! 32 days, I'm starting to worry, and/or wonder if she's even gravid. She's fat as all get out though! Eating 10-12 full size crickets/day and a few silkworms. Everytime I go out on the porch she goes down to the bowl and looks at me like "Dude, where's my food?" EVERY SINGLE TIME I GO OUTSIDE!!!!!

Well at least she's eating good now

I would not worry yet, they can go up to 40 days before laying, and lele's veiled has been gravid since december.

I am very sorry about your loss.

I would do a little more research on feeding anoles. I understand they eat them in the wild and that some people feed them in captivity, however I would not recommend it unless you have a very strict de-worming schedule, because anoles (specially wild caught) have many parasites which are obviously transferred into your cham the moment they get eaten.

Again, it is sad to hear about the death of your ambilobe

Let us know if you find the cause of her death.

sea_in_the_city May 16, 2004 05:34 PM

Good point. It was recommended by the person I got them from, said they were already in their diet. I may work them out of the diet. The more I think about it. Thanks for your sympathy. What sucks the most is that it's the end of a great bloodline. It's terribly unfortunate, but there are others out there. Have a great day.
