afts substrate

mblons May 14, 2004 04:35 PM

Hi. I have two afts and am still trying to find the best substrate. They are about 10 months old. I now have them on cage liner, with a tupperware box in there with moss in it. Also a water dish. They are male and female kept separately in a rack. Cage seems dry with this substrate. I tried bed a beast or comparable and have gotten a million little flies each time after a short while. What can people recommend. Thanks so much. I want them to be happy. They do not seem to explode at the crickets when I put them in.

I personally use a peat/sand mixture at a ratio of about 75% peat 25% sand. never had a infestion problem, at least where I live and it works well for keeping the humidity at appropiate level for AFT's.

Do either of you guys have pics of your mixture (whether it's peat/sand or soil/sand) in your tanks?

Thanks

I've posted this pic quite a few times. heres what mine looks like. I use a very simple setup. humid hide on one end and a large water dish thats actually a cave underneath. I mist the substate once a week. The AFT's love to come out right after I mist, like playing in the rain. Lid is off the humid hide for pic.
