Egg Bound 5 Lined-What should I do?

kfkester May 14, 2004 07:25 PM

I have a wc 5 lined skink that I think is egg bound. When my son and I first caught her, she was eating great, drinking and was very shy. Then a few weeks after we got her, she was wandering the cage looking to get out, and she didn't care if anyone was watching or not. I thought perhaps she was looking for somewhere to lay eggs etc. I think she laid one egg, but I see several bulges in her side, and she doesn't seem to be eating or drinking. Also, she is very lethargic and hang out on the basking spot constantly and her tail has gotten noticeably skinnier in the last week or so.

So, does this sound like syptoms of egg binding and what do you do to help her? Thank you very much for your help.

This is why I don't like to "catch" animals for pets. Could you get her to a vet? I would suggest letting her go back in the wild exactly from where you picked her up. Her natural instincts would have lead her to lay her eggs in the appropriate atmosphere/ native substrate. Maybe it isn't to late for her to do this.

With these 'seldom kept' native species we can seldom replicate the natural needs of the animal as they have not been studied.
