Leopard Geckos eating Pinkies

Arizona May 14, 2004 08:35 PM

Is it healthy to feed my leopard gecko pinkies? For some reason lately he has been refusing all other kinds of food.

You can feed your leo pinks, but only once in a while. I give my female one every couple months and she seems to enjoy them. If your leo is being picky, you could try a pink, but not all will take them. Also try stuff like waxworms, butterworms, silkworm, supers ect. Good luck

have you been feeding your leopard gecko pinkies on the regular basis.I'm sure but I heared that you can't feed leopard geckos pinkies on the regular basis. I feed my leopard geckos mealworms and crickets and superworms. but when I wanted to beef up a leopard gecko before or after mating I just put them on a diet of just pinkies and wax worms. Its works good for me. so I think it is healthy to feed a leopard gecko just pinkies because when a leopard gecko is fat it means its a healthy. So just keep doing what you do if it works good for you keep doing it.Thats what I think personly.

"when a leopard gecko is fat it means its a healthy"
No, not that simple. A leo could live off pinks for quite some time, BUT the FACT is, it will eventually develope problems. I dont know alot of the medical mumbo jumbo but when you feed your gecko just pinks for a while, then try to lean it out by feeding it less fattening foods, this can result in the collapsing of the liver. Do you think leos would just be eating baby mice in the wild? No, inact none.
Like I said I fed my leo pinks when she was laying, to fatten her up. They make good treats every once in a while aswell, but the main diet should consist of crickets/mealworms, preferably mealworm/superworms. I dont know how old you are, but this is coming from a 14 year old so doesnt that make you look stupid.

Read the posts above and below about "I think XXX rule, what does everyone else think." You will see some good input from different angles.

I have the same problem. My male wont eat any of the above mentioned worms. If you throw in a pink, you better be sure to get your fingers out of the way quickly.

I dont want to give him the pinkies if he is going to develop some wierd problem and die. But if he dosent eat, he will die of starvation. How can I win?

Will it kill him to have a perminant diet of pinkies?

Thanks
Jason

Will it kill you to go on a steady diet of Chocolate and Deep-Friend McDonald's French Fries? Yeah... Because, while Yes you WANT fat leopard geckos, Too Much of a Good Thing is BAD. I LOVE Chocolate - but, seriously, if I eat too much of it, it makes me sick.

That's what the case-in-point is on the thread that stevensgeckos started about pinkies and waxworms. You should not give your leopard geckos a staple of diet of pinkies and/or waxworms - it's just not healthy. It's like giving a human chocolate and french-fries (pure grease, trust me) ALL the time. Not good.

It IS perfectly okay to Supplement your leo's diet with pinkies and/or waxworms. You can read this on any caresheet or book.
Supplement: Something added to complete a thing, make up for a deficiency [in this case, a bit of fat in their diets], or extend or strengthen the whole.

Most breeders DO give their females several waxworms and/or a pinky after laying eggs. That's so they'll gain their weight back. But, Just like in Pregnant or Recently-Pregnant Humans, the females need something MORE in their diet, as well.

Arizona & Jason
What all have y'all tried feeding to your leos, other than pinkies? I had a male who wouldn't take ANY of it - until I gave him crickets, and he lapped those up like crazy.
There are MANY different choices of Good, Staple diets out there.

Pinkies and Waxworms just don't happen to be one of them.
