Egg Bounded Gopher Snakes

Arizona May 14, 2004 08:55 PM

I have never had this problem before but lately I have been experiencing a few of my Sonoran Gophers getting Eggbound. These snakes are proven breeders and have a nice healthy weight. Please reply ASAP to why this is happening and what to do when it happens. She started laying 3 days ago and is very swollen around the base of the tail.

Sorry to hear about your snake eggs bound problems .I fell your pain I been there with my favorite snake. It happens to most snake breeders some time or later . It can happen to proven breeders as well as first time breeder .Well some time you can get the eggs out of the snake if you get to them with 24 hours after they start laying , after that its pretty impossible with out killing the snake .Some snake can live with being egg bound but will not be able to breed them again . Some snake Die from being egg bound because that pass stuff throught intestines .
There are many reason egg binding can happen . I have many opinions on snakes getting egg bound .
1 Not use heat tape or other heat elements . females need a veryance in heat to regulate there temps during breeding egg laying . Its good to keep all snake with a warm side and cool side in there cages for digestion as well .
2 To young to breed
3 Not heathly enough to breed
4 Not feel comfortable or stessed out . I had problems with some of my smaller milksnakes because there was to much open space in there net box and they didn't want to lay eggs in there because there uncomfortable until I filled up the nest boxes with moss .

I sure many other people have good opinions too .
