TOKAY WITH MOUTHROT, A COUPLE OF QUESTIONS...

OhioGeckos May 14, 2004 09:34 PM

I have a male tokay, living it up as usual.

So yeah, a few months back me and my vet discovered mouthrot. He gave me some kind of eyedrops and said that it would help with mouthrot. Unfortunately, it didn't seem to cure it nor help it. It has since only gotten worse.

He still eats like crazy, and barks with ease. Just looking for the best way to cure mouthrot and what you guys use.

Also, I was looking to give him a female pretty soon and was wondering if mouthrot is contangeous? I don't want to get a healthy CB Tokay sick.

BTW, I had heard that this may also be linked to some error in husbandry so this is his schedule:

24x18x36
Basking spot - 90, floor of the cage - 76, humidity 75-85%.

Sunday - Fed, dusted w/ Miner-All I
Tuesday - Fed, no dust
Thursday - Fed, dusted w/ Miner-All I, food is gutloaded w/ Vit-all
Saturday - Fed, no dust
Monday - Fed, dusted w/ miner-all I
Wednesday - Fed, no dust, gutload food w/ Vit-all
Friday - Fed, dusted w/ miner-all I

Since his humidity is relatively high, i clean out his feces daily. I feed him lobster roaches as a staple diet. I feed my roaches chicken laying mash for staple food, apples, carrots, romaine, potatoes, and oranges but only towards the end of the month. They seem to breed immediately after they get oranges.

I have never had to deal with mouthrot myself so don't have any good advice. I have read up on it on http://www.drgecko.com/, if you havent been there could be a good site to check out and at least compare what it says with what your vet prescribed. Sorry to hear and hope your Tokay gets well soon.

Mouth rot is caused by vitamin deficiencies from my knowledge. I believe it is vitamin B but not quite sure. When I go to work I'll look up the literature we have on it and get back to you on that.

It is vitamin A and is usually caused by some sort of injury in tokays. You can treat the infected area with a 1% solution of hydrogen paroxide or by use of Batryl. Adding cod liver oil to his diet will help supplement vitamin A.

Maybe he's been hitting his snout against the glass? Or trying to get out. If he's with other tokays they may be nipping his snout. I purchased my tokay who had that problem, but she's by herself and everything healed up. In fact she's quite tame now.

If he's by himself, probably tht's all you can do other than keeping the terrarium clean.

If he's a new pet he will probably settle down after a while.

Mine never even attempts to get out of her tank.-i've left it open for hours sometimes
