Determining age of WC snakes??

byron.d Jun 16, 2003 11:32 PM

I recently collected three San Diego gophers and would like some help figuring out the approximate age of the animals.
The largest is just under five ft. and the smallest is just under four ft.
The area I found them in is heavily populated by rodents (gophers, rats, and field mice).
All three appear very healthy and robust.
My second question is; could this be a breeding group? They were all found in the same shallow burrow, which I thought was kind of odd. They are currently in separate quarantine cages so I haven’t seen any copulation.

Thanks much for any advice. Byron.

to age W/C snakes. It's not like you can look at their teeth like a horse. Generally you just classify them as juveniles, sub-adults and adults. As far as whether these were a "breeding colony" or not...well, it's likely that they may have bred back during the breeding season considering the proximity in which they were collected. They are in the egg-laying season now, though.
