Ants in AZ

Cable_Hogue May 14, 2004 10:41 PM

Hey Gordon,
We saw a particular ant in AZ that I am hoping you can identify. I would have some pictures but my captives died on the trip back and got dumped.
They are a dark colored ant, not unlike the Rugosus, maybe a shade darker. They were roughly the size of Rugosus, maybe a little longer, with longer legs, but narrower body and equal or less total bulk. They were quite common and were usually near p. rugosus too. Do you know what they are? They seemed more prevelant in the east but we found them around Tucson too.
Thanks

Cable, that sounds like either Aphaenogaster cockerelli or A. albisetosa.
Check out the link and see if those are the critters. If not I would not be surprised if you do find your ant on the site.

It is the Aphaenogaster cockerelli

The Cornutum we saw was sitting right on one of these ant hills in the morning. She must have been eating them like popcorn as they came out.

Thanks Gordon, I sure appreciate the ID.
