shasha369 May 15, 2004 12:09 AM

Hello everyone I live in Tucson and when I went to take a bath tonoght I found 2 western Banded Geckos (I identified them from pic's on the net)I am a Bearded dragon owner(7) and own king snakes a Ball python and a red tailed boa so I know a little about reptiles but have never hade a gecko. Can you help me on care for this specis beyond general gecko care which I have read. They are in a 10 gal with a under tank heater (air conditioner) a substra of paper towels and a small bowel of water, also about 20 small crickets dusted with calcium w/D3 was added. Am I doing anything wrong? Can I do more 2mmarow when the pet stores open up?

you are doing everything great so far, I have 12 of these wonderful geckos right now all of which are wild caught, and doing great. One thing that you can do witht he bandeds is that if they are adults, you can easily get them to switch to a mealworm diet, which is a lot easier, at least to me. I have now got all 13 of mine over to mealworms, (even my young ones) and they seem to be growing even faster. Good luck with your bandes, I have a banded gecko care sheet at www.geocities.com/bandedgeckos/home

Thanx-- for the tip on the care sheet and the good wishes. I realy needed some feed back so I know that I'm doing right. When you take from the wild you need to know that the animal will be better of with you, than leaving it go it's merry way to feed something else, that is running around out there. Thank-you again.

Crazy idea: Release them back into the desert before you kill them.

They would be happiest if you released them. If you want banded geckos as pets try to finds some captive bred ones. Would you like it if someone picked you up and put you in a little cage and said that is where you are living if you like it or not. Don't take it the wrong way, I'm not trying to be rude.

I don't have a problem with collection of geckos--all my current crop is wild-caught by friends. However, you should "legalize" what you've done by purchasing your state's hunting license, for two reasons:

1. "Just in case" the issue of legal possession ever comes up
2. Revenues go towards conservation
