Not an indigo expert....with a question.

arik May 15, 2004 10:15 AM

I live in Lubbock TX and would love to find a texas indigo in the wild for some pics. Am I in the wrong area and if not what would be the best place to locate them?
I would also like if someone could post what is required to get an eastern. Permits , etc.
Easterns are, in my opinion the best colubrids I have ever seen for a number of reasons. I'm sure most of you know that though. lol
Any answers would be great.

Tx indigos are not found in NW TX.

They are limited to essentially south - central TX (roughly south of San Antonio...down to the Laredo through Brownsville region and then south into a good portion of eastern Mexico.)Check out some of the field guides for more exact data.

They are completely protected by the state of Texas, but it sounds like you already know that.

As for getting eaterns, check out www.indigosnakes.com
You'll find a breeder list, as well as all of the permit info you'll need and a link to the interstate commerce permit appication.

Thanks. That explains why I've never encountered one while feild herping.
I just moved to Lubbock from Port Aransas (Corpus area) and never encountered any around there either. Maybe it's just not meant to be.lol
Thanks for the site. I'll go check it out.
