mealworm movement?

jsc230 May 15, 2004 12:53 PM

A few days ago I took my mealies bran and added fluckers gutload to it. Now they seem to just lay around until picked up.

Before I did this I had them in just plain bran downstairs in my basement. They were fairly lively. Then a day before i fed them to my gecko I would bring them upstairs and gutload them with the fluckers gutload. They would then become lazy. I thought this was due to being in the warmer upstairs (although they should theoretically move more). I am now thinking maybe it is because of the gutload.

The problem comes in when I go to feed my girl. They don't move so she stares into her bowl for minutes on end waiting for movement.

How can I get this buggers to move more? I've tried a peice of carrot in with them but that did no good. Do I need to gutload since i switched to the ICB dust? I heard that that has everything a geck needs in it. Or is bran a good enough feeding for the mealworms?

Any help is appreciated.

PS. The other day I posted about my beetles not reproducing. Well, I found a ton of babies, now they are seperated and growing (in plin bran).

I gutload my mealies on the flukers stuff and they are active as hell.

Is it the flucker gutload with calcium? If so that's your problem. Gutloading insect with calcium severely lowers their life expectancy, especially if not provided a constant source of moisture. Do you have a blender? if so just make your own. I think leolover has a good recipe on her site.

No problem, I had been using the same stuff for a few years. Now that I have switched gutloads they last so much longer, especially crickets. Crickets used to only last me a week, now they last 2-3 weeks.

Sometimes i buy a cup of mealies and theyre great, giving good beetles and reproducing well, and once in a while i buy a batch that dont live long and dont reproduce well. I wonder if this can come from too frequent inbreeding ?
