Heat pads....anyone with experience please reply....

lilroach56 May 15, 2004 03:40 PM

I am building 2 cages (one for a BP, one for somethind undecided). They are going to be 2' by 4'. I was going to heat it with heat panels, but they are to expensive for my tastes and none will fit my cage good. I remembered about people saying some heat pads can be used in the cage. Is there any truth behind those sayings? if so which brands? where do i get them? is there any precautions i need to take?

The only "Heat Pads" I know of that are safe to use inside on the floor of a cage are kane heat mats. Big apple, and the bean farm both have them I believe. Hope this helps you out.

For the ball python, a heat panel would be ideal. Alternatively, you could install 2 light sockets - one for a ceramic (get a bulb guard too) and one for maybe a daytime heat lamp or something. Bottom line: tropical boas/pythons need enough heat. A small heat pad in a cold cage won't cut it. In summer, fine, but when the cold seasons hits, you'll need ample heating.

If you want to skimp on heating, maybe a temperate-zone colubrid or a Black milksnake might be a better choice. Otherwise, expect to provide plenty of heat.

BTW, Kane heat mats cost nearly what a heat panel does.
