anaconda help.....

lilroach56 May 15, 2004 03:50 PM

This was posted in a thread below, but noone answered my questions in my last post.

Here is my original post:
are yellow anacondas a good choice for a first "big" snake? I would love to own a nice yellow anaconda, if they would be a good choice for a first "big" snake. However if they do not make good choices for first big snakes could you recomend a snake that would be a better choice (BCI, BCC?)? I've owned a Ball python before (and am getting another shortly), and handled a few large BCI (one 8' female, she was a fatty). Also if they would make a good choice could you please direct me to the breeder/dealer?

And here is my 2nd post:
are there any good "starter" big snakes that could teach me more about large snakes? i know of BCI and BCC but is there any others? blood pythons?

can someone answer the questions from my posts?

A redtail is a great choice for a first big snake, a blood can sometimes be a little tempremental. If you realy want a yellow contact Mark Petros @ Stictly Serpents or New England Reptile Dist. (NERD). They should be able to help you with getting a good little yellow.

I think most snakes will make a good first big snake. It is all about your dedication. Every snake has its ups and downs. I have seen redtails that will kill you quicker than a green anaconda. They also use their stregth more frequently because they climb a lot and they can be a pain to work with. Burmese seems to be everyones favorite big snake and I disagree and say they are the most trouble with more common URI's and people get careless. If you are dedicated then get whatever your heart is set on...big snakes are all a hard game but its not like vemon where room for error is none with the wrong species. A male yellow isn't even a huge snake in my opinion but they are big. They require a lot of work but it is work that you will learn and learn to love. Where do you live again? I know great people with just abaut everything, especially BCI. I mean if you have a love for macklots pythons or reticulated, they are tough too but I see no reason why not to do it if thats what you like. You have time to prepare...when you get babies you get experience working with a bigger snake every month since they are growing ; ) Just know that you are getting into a commitment and don't buy something with plans on selling it or giving it to a zoo if it gets to big. I have a 7 foot tiger retic right now and she would be a great first big snake...she eats ft rats and is super calm (beats almost everything I own). I can't sell on here so I won't get into that more but it is just a point. what snakes are big besides anacondas and BCI and BCC. brazilian rainbow boas, scrub pythons, macklots pythons, there are 2 other types of indian pythons besides the burmese (i would not recomend them as they are more rare and one tends to be agressive, I don't really recomend the african rock either since it is a bit too big), Dumerils Boas get pretty big but not huge, a male retic should not get over 15 ft and they are not as heavy as the condas, I am not a huge fan of columbian rainbows but not too many people have and they get pretty big, it really depends on what you like...we can name big snakes all day and tell you everything good and bad about them...find out what you really like and ask the forum specific things about that and what you need know. Good luck.
