What do I do when they hatch?

katieh May 15, 2004 04:54 PM

My first batch of eggs turned out to be bad/infertile, but I've been incubating the second pair for 2 weeks and they look healthy. So now, what do I do with the babies when they hatch? I read theres special things you have to do to care for them. Also, the woman at the pet store said to make sure you have food for them as soon as they come out of the egg or they'll starve to death. Is this true?

Baby geckos will not start eating until they are one week old = 7 days. They will live off their yolk until then. Feed them very small prey items, no bigger that their head, if the prey items are too big they will either not get eaten or the baby will choke and die.

Make sure they have water available at all times. Give them a low enough dish they can actually drink out of, same with a food dish.

Babies need to be kept warm. I keep my babies at 88-90 F. All of my babies are in a rack system. If you have a rack system or whatever you are using make sure those paper towels stay moist with warm or room temp. water so that the baby gecko does not get dehydrated. They need to stay hydrated and do not spray the area on the paper towel where they poop.

Keep the set-up very very simple. Baby geckos do not need anything fancy. The simpler the better for them since they are so young.

Dont listen to what the pet stores tell you, alot of the people that work there are very uneducated.
