Is it posible to become allergic to alligators? I have noticed that when I handle my gator with a short sleeved shirt on, my forarms will itch for hours afterwards.

It is certainly possible that you could have an allergy that is related to your alligator. You could be reacting to the fine dander that is the shed skin of the alligator, or even reacting to the bacteria in the water that the gator lives in.

I had thought that it was something in the water at first. after three complete water changes it still bothered me. I'm glad it wasn't contaminated water but at the sametime, I will be very angry if I am developing a new allergy.
I got into reptiles 22 years ago, mainly because I was allegic to all hairy animals. I have kept Crocodilians for allmost as long.
I keep venonmous reptiles. Crocs. And large monitors. I expected at least one pet induced trip to the hospital in my lifetime. If I end up there for alligator related anaphalaxis, I think I will cry. I would rather be allegic to the monitors.
Has anybody else had trouble like this?

I had a customer a few years ago who thought he had developed an allergy to his iguana. I suggested that he try different beddings and cage furniture--assuming that the problem was with something in the environment, but he still always started itching whenever he cleaned the cage. Months later he got tail-slapped and went into anaphylactic shock. His wife called 911 when his lips turned blue. He was ultimately OK, but did get rid of the iguana.
