When to start feeding fruit

Katt May 15, 2004 09:46 PM

My li'l red tegu is less than a foot long. He doesn't seem too keen on fruits. I offered him a bit of ripe banana no go, a bit of strawberry baby food, no go either. He just likes his rodents and his supers. Doesn't seem keen on any raw meats. Need I be concerned? He sheds alright, gotta help with the tail and a some toes sometimes. Any advice would be great.

Mine don't recognize fruit as food, either, as yet. I feed lots (and I mean LOTS) of crickets. I use oranges to hydrate my crickets. Just put half an orange in the cricket box. That way I can get some vitamin C into the tegus without them knowing it. I raised two kids, and sometimes you got to hide the medicine in a treat! I also mix baby food 'fruit medley' with raw turkey or an occasional chopped hard boiled egg.

I think that when they are young, they are hard wired to eat bugs. I had to rub a fuzzy with cricket juice (don't ask - ugh!) to get the little female to try them. The larger male took one look at the fuzzy and went right for it. You might try glazing your mice with baby food fruit. Let me know how it works.

Good luck!

Do you feed ground turkey? 2-3 times a week I chop up either apples, grapes, oranges, or whatever into pretty small squares, then I roll it up in the turkey ball. Sprinkle some dust on it, and my tegu loves it. He is crazy about the turkey, so I guess he just thinks the fruit is part of it. He'll even eat individual pieces of the fruit. But if I feed just plain fruit, he turns his nose up. Like LizardMom said, sometimes you gotta hide the good stuff in their treats.

Yup i agree.. if i mix the fruit up with their little turkey balls then they will eat them up and if i just leave the bowl in there with the fruit they look at me like come on mom wheres the REAL food... and i give in and throw some turkey in there with them to make them eat the food.. but rolling it into there little turkey balls i havent done but i bet it will work cause they hard to eat oranges, but i want them to have the vit C.. Soooooo i think i will try the turkey ball idea.
