Whats up with the temp gauge????!

I just got my supplies today for the leo im getting soon and like two hours ago I set it all up, turned on the heat lamp, and returned like a half hour later to check the heat to see if it was OK, and the gauge said 60 degrees! then I shut off the lamp and the gauge soon went to 75. What the heck?? How does this happen? Is the gauge defective or what? Any replies would help, thnx
