Shyness again...

mizar 21 May 16, 2004 09:29 AM

I'm a bit worried about my gecko, i have him for over a month now, he's eating quite well, he grows quite fast. He just wont come out of hiding ! I see him about 1 hour every late evening. He comes out to catch a crix or two then he's back into hiding. He seem to be a little less affraid of my hand. Every night i put the crix in his enclosure one by one with my hand. They do run around he must go hunt them. After eating maybe one or two he's back into hiding. He measure about 5 to 6 inch. I give him fairly big crix (1 inch) i worried that one or two might not be enough.

Should i start him on mealies ?
Should i handle him anyway ?
Should i put his enclosure in a more quieter room ? (he is in the same room as the tv)

Any comment would be appreciated !

One to Two crickets?!?!?! wow, my lil 5 week old can eat 3-4 fairly large crickets, maybe 3/4 inch! she just gobbles them up! maybe yours doesnt eat as much because he is almost full grown? but anyway, i thought about hiding places for my little girl and i didnt like it because well, i would never see her. so she didnt have any for like 3 weeks (starting when i first got her), now she has several but she is rarely in them. maybe you should fill in or take some hiding places out and he will have no where to go for a while, then he will get use to it, mine did. also, when i didnt have any hiding places, i gave her a blacklight for heat, so the bright white lights would hurt her eyes and want to hide. but i sometimes did have on the UVA UVB light. maybe it's just your leos personality to be a scaredy cat?

Leopard Geckos NEED places to hide. If they don't have places to hide, they'll get stressed.

Also, leopard geckos are Nocturnal - they normally come out when it's dark, not light. So your leopard gecko's behavior is perfectly normal. I sleep in the same room as all of mine.. lol Trust me - they come out at night.

As for being afraid of your hand, if a hand that was bigger than you are tall came out of the sky to pick YOU up, wouldn't you be the slightest bit afraid? I would be! Remember, they're small, you're big.

Leos really need hides, but if you want to look at her you could get one of those red lights that you can use at night that won't bother her. You could move the cage into the room where you sleep and watch her as you fall asleep, this way you can also see if she comes out at night and is just afraid of the day or if she doesn't like to come out at all. Hope this helps!
