YES!!!! More veggie success!!!....

-ryan- May 16, 2004 10:56 AM

finally, my little 2 year old dragon is almost out of the woods with his parasites and other alments (which were mostly caused by brumating and having parasites...I'm never again going to make the mistake of letting him brumate without a parasite check). His calcium, phosphate, and uric acid levels seem to be leveling out, which is good because he has been eating almost only crickets for the past year and I was simply terrified that he might have kidney problems. Anyways, now that he's doing better and just needs some more panacur for the strongylls, he's eating his veggies like a good little boy! The first success was last week when I tried putting a bunch of small pieces of carrot and some peas over greens, and he gobbled up the carrots and some of the greens. This isn't a very healthy diet, so i've just today started messing with his salad. I put in 30 pieces of greens, 16 peas, 8 carrots, and 8 pellets (fluker not repcal. I ran out of repcal a while ago and am going to get some this week...and yes, I was trying to be exact with the counting). Here's what I found just a few minutes ago:

Greens: Well, I'm waiting until tonight to count them, but it looks like there's a considerable dent in them.

Carrots: 6 left (which is good because I don't want him to always have orange poo, but it gets him interested in the food).

Peas: It looks like there's about 10 left, so he's eating them, which might make him more regular, which would be good since he only goes currently once or twice a week.

Pellets: Only half of one left! Hopefully he'll take to the repcal ones like he does the fluker once, because repcal is known to be better quality.

I'm excited. I wonder if he'll start eating greens like my fat little uromastyx. She'll eat a whole bowl almost as soon as I put them in. Cute little girl.

Now I just need to get a good fecal to the vet to get the parasites figured out, and run some follow up blood work to make sure his levels are good. So far everything is looking good for Sydney.

That is great news, ryan. I'm happy that your little guy is finally learning that salads are, in fact, edible!

Yup, it's taken a long time, but i'm glad he's finally getting the hang of it. I have also sort of been rationing his crickets until he starts eating veggies naturally everyday, without having to just be really hungry. I had read that one of the reasons his calcium levels were off was probably because of his cricket diet, so I decided that it was better to get him going on veggies sooner rather than later. I of course didn't want to start forcing veggies on him while he was in the peak of his parasites and calcium problems, so I had to wait a little bit, but since he recently started to do so much better, I figured it would probably be the best time to start.

It's funny how picky these little guys can be though.

What did you do for his parasite problem? My dragon has had like a yellowish color inside his mouth ever since brumation and he wasn't eating for a long time. Now he eats mostly rep cal pellets and a little veggies now and then. His mouth is still yellowish on the inside though. None of the other lizards he lives with have this.
