Swallowing live pinkies

fatjayhawk May 16, 2004 03:11 PM

I've never encountered this with a young snake before, but since getting my young female corn home she has eaten the first two pinkies before killing them. The first time she bypassed all efforts at constriction and went straight to the swallow. The second time she through herself on top but no coordinated constriction, etc. She seems in above average health but thought someone might want to normalize this behavior for me. By the way, new baby Honduran did basically the same but was a lot more coordinated on the second effort and waited until pinkie was dead. Could this behavior be an artifact of growing and feeding in their small shipping containers?

Not a problem. Sometimes they constrict sometimes they don't.
No big deal.

I have 2 corns and a milk and all three don't constrict. I feed frozen thawed (F/T) and they all just start swallowing. WHy not switch to F/T. It's much easier to go to the freezer and get a meal then realize at the last moment that you need to go buy a live prey after stores are closed. Unless you raise your own. It's safer for the snake and you don't have to watch the poor little mouse suffer. My jungle carpet, on the other hand, will still constrict even though I feed her F/T rats.
Even now that my corns are yearlings they still just swallow their meal. If yours are still young they should switch with no problems. If they won't take it then I just wiggle the meal a little and then they go for it.
Just my 2 cents..

Yes, it is much easier to feed them F/T then live. None of my snakes really constrict. I have kings that hit very aggressivly, but just swollow.
