How to treat ich in tank with firebellys?

polojunk May 16, 2004 04:20 PM

Hello,

I have a 20 gallon long 1/2 land 1/2 water setup with 5 firebelly toads. In the water section I have 4 tiger bards. 2 of them are developing ich infections, and do you think it would be safe to use ich medication in the tank with the firebellys. The medication contains formeldahyde and malachite green, and says its safe for all fish, so would it be ok for the firebellys?

umm im no expert on the subject, but i would think taking the firebellys out of the tank until the ick goes away would be the safest thing todo, and maybe change the water after the ick goes away also.

I agree. Remove the toads while medicating the fish or, even better, remove the fish to a quarantine tank if you have one setup and medicate them in that. I've used a few different types of fish medications to treat fungal infections in newts and African clawed frogs but I don't know how safe the ich treatment would be for your toads. If you don't want to remove either kind of animal contact a vet before using the meds. Good luck,

Hey..I would think that the ick could be caused by the fbts. I mean, they do excreet toxins, so it can't possibly be good for the fish. I once put two guppies in my toad tank thinking that they would be eatin, but they just ended up getting really sick and dying within the week.
I would assume that the only way to have fish in your tank would be if you had a really great filter working.
Oh, and I agree with what that person said, that if you treat the fish, do it in a seperate enclosure!
