GTP care

beardielover13 May 16, 2004 05:42 PM

I have always liked snakes and lizards and currently have a breeding pair of bearded dragons. I was looking through a previuos issue of REPTILES MAGAZINE when I saw a picture of one. I just love their greens and they seem to be a good snake choise for a beginner, but i don't know. Can anyone tell me if they are a good snake for a beginning snake keeper. Will someone also tell me care and breeding. i wouldn't breed right away, but i may eventually want to. Any informatio would be helpful. Thanks in advance.

Hi,

My boyfriend just got a pair of GTPs...this after many years of keeping other snakes (retics, soloman islands boas, carpet pythons, rainbow boas and others I can't remember)....and he was STILL fearful of getting his first GTPs. And this after he researched them extensively.

No, they're not for beginners. THey have very special needs to attend to. For GTPs, you must be meticulous in husbandry, or your pythons will suffer.

Anyway, I'm no expert (I personally own a ball python and brazilian rainbow boa), but I don't think you should get a GTP as a beginner.

I wouldn't say that the GTP is a beginner snake, but I would say that a beginner can keep one and do it well if they are smart and do the homework first. Prior experience with detailed animal husbandry is a definite advantage.

The requirements aren't difficult to maintain, it's just that it takes a little bit of practice to get it dialed in. Captive bred and born chondros are pretty easy to raise and especially helps a newbie gtp keeper have a pleasurable experience.

.......... speaking from experience.............

It really depends on the begginer. I'm kind of a begginer. Before my GTP all ive had was a leopard gecko, crested gecko, ball python, bullsnake, hognose, egyptian tortoise and a uro. Nothing really past "beginner" easy to care for-reptiles. So if your dedicated, go for it. It's one of the best decisions I've ever made. Love him to death.
