Backyard play for my boa

xJohnRx May 16, 2004 06:19 PM

Since we are seeing nice weather now where I live I would like to take my boa outside to enjoy the sun with me. My only concern is whether or not I would be putting her at high risk for mites if I let her climb and play around on the tree braches behind my house. I know that you should make sure wood is treated or heated in the over before placing it in an enclosure so is it ok for her to play on untreated wood outdoors ?

Thanks
John

I have never attributed mites with letting my boas outside for a while, although it is possible, just like you could get fleas from walking around outside. The main concern I would have would of course be the neighbors. Know you local laws about owning a boa (if there are any) as well as any subdevelopment bi-laws in regards to it. If the neighbors see you "taking your snake for a walk" they might just call someone that you may not want over to your home. And please remember, that even a freindly wildlife officer, can not come into your house without you letting him or a warrant. So if asked to let them come in politly refuse and talk to them on your front stoop.
Just some advice

I always wonder if I'd be at risk for losing my snake if I took her outside. Do they tend to "dash" away in whatever direction they want to go?

I have never noticed mine to Dash, they tend to move around slowly and investigate the air and sounds and such. They really seem to enjoy it but sometimes I think they are overwhelmed somewhat since it is a new experience for them. Also if they do settle outside they tend to not want to go in. I been bitten by my BRB while tryin to get her back inside. One of the only times I been bitten but definitely a great learning experience.
