I've been bitten several times, more than once through the bag the snake was in, but never that badly. Just one left a scar, but that was because I pulled back, and she snagged a a large tooth on my wrist. No hospitals (plus, the nearest "hospital" was a 4.5 hour drive). People often think a (non-venomous) snake bite is very dirty, or full of bacteria, but typically that's not the case.

The largest I caught was 5.85 meters, 212 pounds, in Ecuador. The bigger ones are pretty hard to find, not to mention catch. I think it is funny how almost all zoos, not to mention books, like to say that anacondas get up to "over 30 feet in length", however the longest snake documented, ever, is Samantha the retic at the Bronx zoo, and she's about 23 feet, I think.

I was bitten once by a Crotalus viridis, (I stepped on it while doing a bird survey in thick brush), but luckily it bit my steel-toed boot at the toe. Getting bitten by a venomous snake is not something to brag about, 90% of those bites occur due to stupidity. I have the sinking feeling that the incredibly sensationalistic "Venom ER" on the Animal Planet is going to result in even more rattlers dead, with more people now panicking about getting bitten.

Actually, I believe that the longest snake ever highly documented was the female reticulated python kept at the Highland Park Zoo in Pittsburgh, PA. This snake was captured in the wild in 1949 at a length of 22 feet. It died of health complications in the late 1950's. At the time of her death, she was 28.5 feet in length and weighed just slightly over 300 pounds.
The largest anaconda that I am aware of that was accurately measured was a female just a few inches short of 25 feet. It was encountered by Bill Lamar in the late 1970's in Colombia. Other anacondas have been reported in the past that were said to be larger than this but documentation is either lacking or highly questionable. It is interesting that the length of anacondas is probably the most exaggerated of any other boid.

I agree, snakes tend to measure about 10% longer when dead if they are stretched straight with any kind of tension. The Pittsburgh retic was measured about a year before it died by running a flexible tape measure along the center of it's back. Not the most accurate way, but probably not too far off. I would have really liked to have seen her in life. I have seen several retics in person that were accurately measured between 20 and 25 feet and they were very impressive. A 28.5 footer would be an incredible snake.

I feed the larger constrictors rabbits that are in the 10 to 12 pound range. Everything is fed f/t.

When I finaly get my "perfect" house I plan to get a female green anaconda. I was planning to start a little colony of pigmy goats is that over kill for food?? I was thinking rabbits but they stink SO bad and are alot of work. If goats get out of hand.. Ya slap them on the BBQ and eat the little sucker. So would a pigmy goat be too large of a meal for a adult female green???

Adults pygmy goats run around 50 lbs., and it would take a good sized female to eat it. However, you could always use younger and smaller goats.
