Dekay's Snake

4everherpn May 16, 2004 06:54 PM

I have a wild caught Dekay's Snake. I have decided to try to keep it. It is in a 1 gallon critter keeper with moss I gathered from the woods as substrate. I moisten the container every other day. I have a half of a small plastic flower pot for a hiding place and a fake plant for aesthetics. I keep it at room temp nearby a window so that the snake can use the natural day light as its time clock. I am currently just placing earthworms in the tank. I cannot really tell that he is eating them, butI know he seems to be doing fine. There is also a small water dish in there too.

I have 2 questions...

I have a tank that has 3 different species of tree frogs in it and a huge tiger salamander (A.t. nebulosum). I was wondering if I were to put the snake in there would it be safe (either for the snake or the critters in there)?

Would that 1 gallon critter keeper be too small for another full grown adult Dekay's snake? There is one currently being kept as food in the snake lab of one of my professors. I want to rescue it. They seem to be pretty cool snakes.

I have 2 dekay's myself. Both of them are kept in a five gallon enclosure. You can use a small container and cut some worms into managable sizes to keep track of if the snake is eating or not. I wouldn't put it into the tank with the tiger salamander. I have seen large tigers that would snap anything they could fit into their mouths. It is always a good idea to keep herps seperate if at all possible. Good luck with your new Storeria they make really cool pets.b
