Good founding stock for a rat colony?

mariasman May 16, 2004 09:53 PM

WHERE can Joe Average get great founding stock for a rat breeding colony?

Also, which strains out there (that CAN be acquired by Joe Average) have the greatest overall fecundity?)

I personally have never gone in for the 'super' rat strains supposed to be out there. Since I gotta look at them and occassionally sell extras off for pets I go for good sized, healthy rat lines that may throw interesting colors or types. That said, hairless are likely not a great feeder choice as they don't gain size well as others. Right now I do have a blazed/badger line that gets freakin' huge fast, great temperaments and all have unique markings so are easy to sell as pets. I also do dumbo rats and blues.
I tend to cruise the pet shops and hand pick my future breeders. DON'T pick ADULT rats. You will find they reproduce slower than if you get half grown young things and raise them up together.
