DH BLIZZARD litter............

Jeremy Stone May 17, 2004 01:21 AM

I told everyone I would keep them informed on this. I have 3 DH snow blizzards gravid this year, and this was my first shot. I got 23 Babies NO slugs from a DH to a DH. In the litter were 8 Albinos, 3 type 2 anerythrsitics, and a bunch of Poss hets. The Albinos are VERY cool. They have a creamy color to them. Like the Sunglow background almost, but not the pretty patterns with the bowties of the sunglow. Very high patterned. If someone would send me a link to a GOOD easy FREE FTP I'd post some pics. I have new computers, and I haven't been able to find a good FTP that is easy to use. I keep downloading them and they are HARD to use, so I forget it. ANYWAY, NO BLIZZARDS this time around. These 1 out of 16 things STINK!!!!! Especially when you have 23 and NO Blizzard or snows. I could see there were albinos, and I peeled back the paper, and I thought FOR SURE there was a blizzard. There was an albino that was upside down. I put the paper down quickly and let the female sit with the babies to do the Mother thing. (I like to do this so they know they had a good litter). Then when I came back, that Blizzard was just and Albino. DANGIT!!!!! Hopefully next litter. I can't WAIT. Take Care Everyone, Jeremy Stone

Funny Behavior: The Grandsire is in the Picture posted. She gave a litter just a few days ago, and was VERY aggressive after the babies were born. She is VERY hungry too. She is sitting at the Window of the cage just acting like she is waiting for food. Well, this litter was just One cage below. She acted like she could smell the babies. She was at the front of the cage moving with everymove I made like she was protecting her GrandBabies. LOL. I'm sure she was just hungry, but that is what it looked like. It is very cool to produce a couple generations and see all the different looks. It was a GOOD day.

I'm sorry about the "no Blizzard" thing. I would like one of those Type II Anerys. They are very cool looking.

Thats cool, better luck on the other 2 litters of dh's.
I have produced many clutches of balls, but this year will be my first doing boas. Ive kept boas for as long as balls, and have never had a problemn with aggressive behavior(unless of course they smell a rat), im just curious on how you, approach and remove, or handle a new momma boa, that is aggressive as you spoke of.
i know my 7 ft females are very, very strong, and could do some damage if wanted. I have an idea, but would like to know how you deal with them. And do you do it alone?

Thanks

Mike

What I usually do when the mother is full of attitude, is to take a full-length towel, and slowly cover her head and front half of her until I can get ahold of her to move her. I feed all of my snakes in separate enclosures, and have to use the towels after feeding as well. They definately know which is there feeding cage - it could be completely sterile, and free of any rodent smell, but they still know that its there feeding cages.

VERY CAREFULLY is how you do it. LOL. I got WORKED by this DH snow blizzard, and it is the first time I got badly bitten by a mother right after babies. I got Careless. Usually I use a hook and block the head. I move her or STEER her, as they are very happy to go after whereever you are, away from the babies. Then I quickly grab her head. I prefer to have someone with me and help me, but sometimes It is an Alone job. When you grab the head they IMMEDIATLY want to twist and rap your arm up. So, you just have to make sure when she does this, she doesn't SMASH babies. I then remove her and feed her after she is done with all her contractions. I used to just put a rat in there. They would grab it, and I would try to get the babies out while constricting. I learned my lesson there, as they sometimes will grab the rat, and when they see you grab the babies, let go of the rat, and grab you. LOL.

So, you really just have to do it very carefully. I have also learned the Mother is VERY aggresive in most cases untill AFTER she sheds the first time. Usually they feed, and shed about 2 weeks after giving birth. After they feed a few more times, they are MUCH more mellow. Hope this helps. Just be Careful. My whole arm is swolen because of a NASTY bite yesterday. MY FAULT TOTALLY. Didn't handle her with the stick. Take Care, Jeremy

when you grab behind the head, can you hurt her by squeezing too tight?
It takes a good bit of power to hold behind head and keep her from going back through your hand, cause if she does, then shes gonna be really pissed.

Thanks, i guess theres nothing like real life experiance in that situation, i hope to find out next year. Me and my sharp albino female have never had any problems. I hope she remebers what good buddies we are when it comes time.

Great looking snakes Jeremy and good luck with your other litters!
