6 down one left, cat has to go

ETChipotle May 17, 2004 10:14 AM

Well, since I got married a couple of weeks ago, my cat has killed all but one of our lizards, so I guess it's time for her to go.

We really do want to be able to have small animals in the house, and we know that we aren't perfect enough to keep this determined cat out of our cages. She doesn't have the right attitude about traffic to be an outdoor cat on our street, so today we have to take her back where we got her.

She's gotten into the cage of the one remaining lizard a couple of times since the tank mates were all killed a couple weeks ago, but "Latte" the flying gecko lies so still on the bark and blends so well that I guess the cat doesn't know she's still there.

I've been looking on the Kingsnake Classifieds for more flying geckos in the past two weeks but haven't seen any. I'm sure they'll show up soon enough though. The my wife got from Aquarium Stuffers were the most beautiful flying geckos I've ever seen (not that I've seen that many) they had great tails, great patterns and one was huge!

Well bygones are memories!

...is how you figured the cat should have access to the herp areas at all. Even if you can secure the lids enough to prevent a cat from killing all the lizards, cats can stress the he!! out of reptiles by watching/pawing/chasing them thru the glass fronts. We have 22 or so enclosures for various reptiles in several rooms here, and we also have two adult Bengal cats which are strictly indoor cats 24/7. The cats are NEVER allowed access to any room containing herps (or rodents), for reasons I always assumed were obvious.

Tsk tsk.

I have 30 gecko in our bedroom, and our cat only look at them
We feed the gecko in rubbermaid and the cat is sitting/laying next to them without problem.
he DO chase cricket when they get out lol but that's a bonus
but most cat aren't like this I guess...
my enclosure aren't screened lid, just melamine with plexi doors
so it's no way she can get it.

sorry about you loose your flying...

That really is SAD! I knew it was going to be trouble from the last time you posted about the cat, getting in to the tank.

Luckily they all stayed safe except the one female got bite marks that time.

When ever there is a first time, it INCREASES the DESIRE for a NEXT time.

Once you see the interest is there, as DC said NEVER ALLOW THE CAT IN THE SAME ROOM.

I'm sure you feel bad enough ! VERY SAD NEWS ! Very Sorry for all the little pretty babies

Also I did note you got married, Congratulations on your marriage!

May I ask WHO was the survivor?

Well, last summer, after I got the collared lizards, my wife got 4 flying geckos. I had flying geckos when I was a teenager, and I think they are just the coolest.

So I gave her my 45 gallon aquarium that was dormant, and she made it into a beautiful terrarium. She bought Zuni, a male at a local pet store. Then she bought 3 more from Aquarium stuffers and they were two females and a male. The male, Casper, died within a few weeks. Probably a stress/parasite thing. Latte was named for the creamy stripe that was sometimes evident along her back. She's still here. Toffee was the biggest flying gecko I've ever seen. We think she was laying the eggs.

There are some pictures here (sorry about tripod popups):

Latte is the only flying gecko left. She was "being the bark" as we call it. Flying geckos can disappear quite well on a big piece of bark.

The collared lizards were all killed.

We're now down to 2 pets from 9, the parrot and 1 flying gecko. We took the cat away this morning.
