concerning hets what an issue

bigdee May 17, 2004 11:21 AM

I Want to breed albinos so im looking to get a het, but it seems so hard to save up $800 and pay for snakes, I have been looking to get a male around $200 but then to get a female will be at least $600 I have a norm female but breeding a norm to a het will take forever to produce albinos. I never paid that much for a animal the most is almost $500 for my het albino boas that will hopefully breed next season I also had more dough coming in then. So do anyone here save up for your balls or does everyone who has morps have alot of doe to put out or reptiles? Do balls breed yr round or just a certain part of the yr? If I have babies how long before they are able to breed?

I am currently working two jobs with no days off. I won't have to work like that forever just till I get some of these guys paid off. And to answer your question I too tried to save for awhile but it was taking too long (wasting time I could have been using to work on getting them bigger instead of saving just to buy them) so I bought my male albino and 100% het female on my credit card and now work to pay it all off.

hello there,
well first off let me tell you that you shouldn't have a prblem finding a het male for the price you're willing to pay. it took me awhile but i was fortunate enough to find mine for 150. now there are some breeders out there that are willing to do payment plans if you want to go that route. if not then you can wait until you can breed you het male (when and after you get him) to your normal female and then sell some of the offspring to come up with the money to buy your het female. now to what i've learned on them breed. now corret me if i'm wrong here anyone. a male ball python should be able to breed within one and half to two years of age and a female within two and half to three years of age. i've seen breeders make mention that the male has to weigh 1.5-2 lbs or 600 grams and a female about 3.5 lbs or 1500 grams for a good clutch.
well those have been my observations and i hope they have helped.

I have always done payment plans. Find a breeder you trust & see if he'll work with you. most of the time if they do they will require a 25% down payment. So if it's $1,000 then you have to give a $250 deposit. Also see if there's any stuff in your house you'd be willing to sell to put money to your hets. Here's an example. I had bought a set of technics turntables with coffin & mixer for $700 (good deal) a couple months went buy & I said screw it & sold em to my friend who jumped on the deal & used the money for snakes...personally I said screw it I can always buy another set if I really want later on. So if you can't wait & can sacrifice some stuff that's always a quick option. You can breed between a year & 3 years old.. personally I don't like to breed a male under 900 grams if I can. I see people breeding 600 gram males & to each his own I just feel that they are too small & should have more time to grow before becoming a man.,lol females 1500 grams & up would be good.

I bought a 100% het male in early 1999 I think it was (1998 male for $435 or something like that). I was lucky enough to find a near adult normal female about the same time for somewhere in the $50 - $75 range (back when you could buy a big CB female reasonable). They produced 4 daughters in 2000 and one of those proved het producing two albino eggs in 2003. Unfortunately the little albinos didn't make it but the point is that you could possibly produce albinos in 4 to 6 years starting with a normal female and a het male if you just have a little patience and put in the work. You could cut that shorter if you start out with bigger animals (check pet stores and papers for big former pet females – but be sure not recent imports – see them eat) and raise the daughters up quicker than I did. The daughters will only be 50% chance so you need to raise several up to increase your odds of one being het so this method requires both patience and a lot of work but very little money.

Bigdee,

Another option:

I purchased a 100% het ( proven 5 year old breeder ) from a reputable dealer and paid $250 total. Actually, I purchase a pair of blodd pythons( babies ), and decided I did not want them. I traded the pair and got the het in return. One of the babies died so I sent an additional $100.00 as reimbursment. Babies $100 = $250.00

Anyways, as far as the female goes, I picked up a 66% het for $200.00 if my memory serves me right. I purchsed the girl as a juvenile, so I know the dealer has not had a chance to breed her. This way the dealer is not selling me stock which did not prove out. I decided to wait another year so next season I will see if this stratedgy will pay off. Look at it this way, there is a good possibility of producing albinos for a fraction the the cost by simply waiting a year.

Hope this helps,
Toddg
