Help

Hi,,

My name is Terry and I volunteer at a home for unwanted and stray cats and dogs. Yesterday a young woman came in with a lizard, She said it was a blue tongue skink (indonesian). As we do not care for any other animals apart from cats and dogs we had to turn her away. She asked if there was anywere else for her to take it amd we told her that unfortunatly there was not! She then asked for the nearest vet so she could have it put to sleep. As I love reptiles I asked her to give it to me instead of killing the poor thing. She agreed but said I'd have to take it there and thrn and said she could offer no advice on keeping it as she had only had it the two days. Its been checked over by the vet and it is in perfect health (she isn't really trained in reptiles so I'll have this confirmed soon).

I went to the nearest pet store and bought a 4 foot x 2 foot vivarium, a heat mat, a basking light and a UV reptile light. I set it up in the office and transferred her home that evening.

I was wondering if you could give me advive on what and how often to feed her (I understand that variety is the key), but what would be best? Should meats be cooked or raw? Does she need to be bathed? And how often? I've got small bark shavings on the ground and a quarter sectioned off for shade with moss on the floor to keep her moist, is this ok? Do they have a shedding period? Do they have any times of the year where there conditions need to change? And most importantly;; IS THERE ANYTHING I CAN DO TO MAKE SURE SHE IS HAPPY?????

I thank you all in advance for any help and even for taking the time to read this. If it is easier for anyone to e-mail me directly my address is terrytastic@blueyonder.co.uk

Thanx

Terry L xxx

Hi,
Blue-tongues are one of my favorite lizards, and are really not difficult to keep. It sounds like you've gotten off to a great start.

In general, Blue-tongues are omnivorous, needing a diet of both insects, pinkies, worms, etc., as well as greens and fruit.

There are several good websites online about these marvelous animals. In fact, here's one from your native UK:

Also try these:

I hope this helps!
