Fat tail substrate

mblons May 17, 2004 01:15 PM

Thank you everyone for your responses regarding substrate for fat tails. Is there a particular brand of potting soil that people use. Also, many people seem to use the potting soil/sand combo. Is this play sand or one of the calcium sands. Also, what is the ratio of potitng soil and sand. Thanks.- Mark

I use 75% peat/soil, which ever you prefer and 25% sand. The reason I use this ratio instead of just throwing numbers at you is that sand does not hold humidity as well which is the whole purpose of a substate for AFT's. others ratio's will work and a lot could do with the climate you live in. I happen to live where its hot all year and temps reach well over 100 for 6 months, extremely dry and arid.

When you say "peat" do you mean peat moss? Thanks for reply- Mark

Actually what I'm using now is Eco Earth. I believe its ground up coconut compressed into a brick and after soaking in water it looks like and has a texture exactly like peat moss. I origionally bought it to mix with bark for my Tokays substate and liked it. I've been using it for a couple years.

I'm using the same thing,(Eco-Earth) & sand...about 1/3 to 2/3 ratio, more sand.....seems to work well for me as well.

Here's a pic.
