Feeding Cicadas

pinky May 17, 2004 01:41 PM

My turtles are having a feast on cicadas. Is there any problem with this?

Is that if you're feeding the 17-year cicadas, your turtles have a long wait till their next feast!

I feed the annual kind to my box turtles and they love them.

Uh..is there any difference between the 17 year and the annual cidcadas?

They haven't hatched in OK yet, but cicadas are a regular summer food source for my herd. Right now I'm out looking for june bugs every night.

Yeah--they're different species, and the annual cicadas can be found every year. I leave it as an exercise for the reader to figure out the frequency of appearance of 17-year cicadas.

I haven't seen too many June bugs yet in South TX--they're out, but not in force. I can't remember the species names of the cicadas in our neck of the woods (I'm originally from OKC), but you have the green ones, and the larger brown/black mottled ones (which can be attracted by the sound of a lawn mower).
