Australian Laws

crazytodd May 17, 2004 02:16 PM

Anybody out there live in or around the Brisbane area? Me and my wife are relocating to either Brisbane, Melbourne or Sydney and I haven't found any specific info on keeping non-native or venomous species. I wanted to get some red foot or spur thigh tortoises but all my Google searches for local breeders in Australia have come back empty! Any help into the local laws would be greatly appreciated!
Thanks
Todd

Search for "Environment Australia" on Google; I think that's one of the entities that addresses such matters. The short answer is "no, you can't keep non-native animals." They're a little touchy about that after all the feral cats, foxes, rabbits, cane toads, etc. have wreaked havoc on the native flora/fauna. You WILL, however, be able to keep a range of the native animals that might be rare/expensive in the herp trade in other countries.
