This is a new one for me

Crotus May 17, 2004 03:24 PM

I have recently started a new 1.4 colony of mice. The first litter from the first pregnant female was small (7). I wasn't concerned because it is her first litter. It is the second female that I am worried about. She got HUGE. Thisis also her first litter. Two days ago she started to give birth. 7 pinks. But it doesn't look as though she is done. She is still big with the tell-tale side bulges. I would swear there are more babies in there. HAs anyone seen this before? Is it possible for her to give birth to some, stop for a few days, and then have the rest? I am concerned that one of the pinks may have, well...stuck. There is no obvious blockage and mom is moving around just fine. The pinks are getting nursed, but I can't say for sure by whom. Any stories, or suggestions?

Well! She finished! Two days after she started (and then stopped) giving birth, she had 4 more babies. I didn't know it was possible, but...well...there it is. She has lost the "I'm gonna pop" side bulges, there are more pinks than before and everyone seems to be doing well.

Okay. This was nasty. I assumed that she had finished because the "side buldges" were gone. It has been several days now and I checked in on them last night. She wasn't done. Something did apparently get "stuck". Instead of growing out sideways, she grew down. HEr feet could barely touch the ground. She looked bad, and the remaining pinks (I have fed a lot of them off already) were obviously not getting the nutrition they needed. I Gassed her and disposed of her. I didn't want to risk the health of any of my snakes. Since it is obvious that the other female wasn't feeding the pinks, they had to go too. I am saving them for food though. Just thought I'd finish this one off.
