breeding question

imaturtlefan May 17, 2004 06:42 PM

I have a male that is almost 3 and a female that I bought this winter that is 2. My male shows bobbing and all those gestures, but the female just doesnt seem interested, I have not seen them successfully mate at all. He tries, but she just is lazy and has not interest. Could this be because she wasnt brumated, cause I dont know if she was, actually I doubt she was. I am just worried, I paid a LOT for her, and Im afraid she could be old, and I was suckered, or am I just being paranoid and after brumation this year she will breed?

Well, she will probable breed in time, she just may not be breeding this time of year. If you want to try to brumate them, you can. I want you to take into consideration that you will need to be prepared for a large possible number of hatchlings, their food, cages, lights, and supplements will cost a lot of money and unless you can sell each dragon for an at least okay price, you may not make a profit. Also, consider the current flood of dragons on the market, you could bring down the value if you breeding on such a small scale. Just keep these things in mind before you decide to breed them. Thanks

just curious...how can one breeding on a small scale bring down the market as opposed to breeding on a large scale? Im confused as to what you are saying.

I wouldn't worry about it. Yes the market goes up and down, sometimes like a rollercoaster, but that's just the way it goes. If you can't handle a drop then you shouldn't be in this business. I don't think small breeders have that big of an effect on it in the overall. What I don't like to see is people who breed just for the $$$, cutting corners everywhere and puting out sick and dieing animals, that gives us all a bad name.

ok...this has really gotten way off the topic of my original questions...lol... now back to my original, not much was givin to me in the way of answering my first questions...I got one answer that said she just may not be ready...if she wasnt brumated could it just mean she will wait till next year, after Ive done that, I only aquired her in Feb.?

I would seperate them and try putting them back together in a week or so. Time apart and reintroduction will usually do the trick.

I don't mean a single small breeder is doing all the dirty work. What I was trying to say is that there are quite a few out there and all of them combined cause a problem. Yes the market goes up and down, but this year has been especially hard for many small breeders I know.

I have not had any problems at all this year but that is because most of my dragons were sold locally. The ones sold over the internet were the left over pretty much.

Just know that you need to be prepared for a possible 100 babies in a 2 year old female. But it does depend on the individual animal, some lay a lot, some lay just one clutch. Just be prepared.

I am not trying to discourage you by any means, just informing you.
