eggs keep molding!?

imaturtlefan May 17, 2004 07:05 PM

Ihave had 2 clutches from my female leo this year, I have seen her successfully mated by my male, both are about 1.5 yrs old and healthy, why do my eggs keep molding? I dont have it too humid I dont believe in my incubator and the temp is right at 80 degrees...any ideas?

Infertile eggs mold. Fertile eggs will not grow mold. Make sure your female is still being housed with the male.

she is being housed with the male, and as I said, I actually witnessed copulation... I have heard that improper heat, humidity will cause even good eggs to mold, how often are male geckos sterile? could this be the case?

Fertile eggs can grow mold. I would guess more likely your incubating medium is too moist. Lighten up on the water or add some perlite to the mixture. What's your incubating set-up?

The only thing other than infertile eggs that comes to mind is the moisture content of the incubating medium and whether there is circulation in the container. Perlite or vermiculite should be mixed not more than equal parts medium and water. There should also be small air hole(s) in the contaner to allow a small air exchange

well, they are in vermiculite, and I dont use that much water, there are small air holes in the incubator, I had success with turtle eggs last year in it...I wonder is my male gecko is just not fertile or something
