Black corns in southern Florida.

bigred1 May 17, 2004 07:18 PM

I'm not into all the different kinds of corns(Cream.,albino,snow,zig-zag,and so on). I catch or take photos and let go most of the snakes I find now. I just got back from a trip to south fl. where my party caught 6 black corns(anery-I guess like I said not much into the cross-breeding and what not, looks like a dark great plains ratsnake that is a cornsnake). It's been a good 6 years since I was there and things have changed, we have caught corns like this before but only one or two every trip or two. I just wanted to know if anyone else has info on this snake in this region or if research has been made to determine if this snake is expanding its local. Its my first time to these parts we saw more black corns than reds(we did see 5 reds and a couple of dors).
If any info please post. Thanks.

I have heard from another source that some selective pressures (not sure the specifics) in the region are increasing the number of anery corns.... then again, maybe someone is releasing captive hatched anery corns in the area (u never know)

Not sure about the east coast but the West Coast of FL is just littered with Natrual Anery Corns. I do Beleive that it was the Loves that caught one of the two original Anery Corns on Pine Island. Lehigh Acers seems to have maor Anery Corns then Normal corns but drive just a bit to the south in Northern Collier County and the wild Corns there Will Rival any Oakatee Corns. Go a bit to the south of Collier County and the Corns start getting into the Miami Phase Color, come into the glades and the Yellow Rats turn into Everglades Rats and on the Other Side you Find a high number of Natrual Motley Corns? Can't explain it but it is what I have seen over the years of herping around here in South FL (I have been in this area for 32 years now)
Oddly enough it was also this area that the original Albino Gater Snakes started through Chris MacQuade and a wild caught one that was brought to him.
It's a cool place to live
