Mental Retardation in iguanas

mike d May 17, 2004 08:02 PM

i know the topic sounds odd. But my iguana is not coordinated at all.. and he ahs been to the vet so many times it isnt funny. and myv et and myself are running out of things that could be cause my igunana not to be able to climb. and i was just looking thorugh my books(which i have read cover to cover about a million times) and i just thoguht maybe my igunana has a mental retardation. im not sure if they could but it is the only other thing that ic an think of that he could have. he has no MBD or anything. he is completely healthy..

Anyways he is going to be getting a new cage that will be right for him.. since he cant climb he will be getting a new cage with alot more floor space since that is all he cahe use. it will be shaped like a L and it will be 8 feet long x 4 feet wide on both parts.. well thats what i am aiming for. not sur eif it will work but thats what i would like.

Its not necessarily mental retardation but more like just suffering from not being cared for properly before you got him...Lack of proper care can do a number on these guys and tho it is uncommon for them not to be able to climb, it isnt unheard of...kudos to you for making the effort and providing him with proper care for the rest of his life...and also caging him in something he will be happy in....good luck with the cage and let us have a pic when you are done....Lyn

My Ig has the same problem. He cannot climb well, falls a lot, and is a lot "slower" than most Iguanas. I think it has a lot to do with how he was cared for earlier in his life and how he was mistreated. Was your Iguana adopted and if so, was he not properly cared for by his first owners?

i adopted my iguana from a shelter place. he was being cared for by people who worked for the shelter. i dont have alot of history of his previous owners and how he was cared for. he was put in the middle of a divorce and the husband left and his ex wife didnt know how to care for it. and then it was taken in from the shelter. i guess when she broght it to the shelter she said she hadnt changed anyhting in the way he was cared for. so she kept it the same. his diet was worng and just about everything was worng and that is all i know. they didnt say how he was cared for they just told me that he wasnt cared for properly. so i dont know what is worng with him.

i am hoping to start on the cage when i am done with school for the summer which is in a few weeks. i cant wait. ill keep everyone posted.

that the previous owners were pot heads?

I have seen several iguanas with the behaviors you describe and every one has come from a pot head home. One in fact was fed pot.

Hi,

I've seen this, too. Ferdy, my baby, a rescue, spent most of his life in a cage he could barely move in, never mind climb. We gave him a nice perch in a big window and were amazed to find that he could climb down from it! He'd often try to jump, but he wasn't very coordinated and would often fall. It's been a year and he's better at climbing, but he's still clumsy. He's a free roamer when we're home and restricted to the living room when we're out - the living room has been customized just for him. I'll try to post a few pics....

Peace,
C

LOL! I'm sorry guys, it's late and apparently my fingers and brain are not communicating well. From my last post:
"We gave him a nice perch in a big window and were amazed to find that he could NOT climb down from it!"

I forgot the NOT.

Peace,
C
