Fertile or Infertile eggs?

pekerchuk May 17, 2004 09:33 PM

Well, my female has been housed with my male, for the past 4 months, she's a year old, he is 2... she laid her first clutch 33 days ago, and her second yesterday, there all in an incubator. Is there any signs to tell if there infertile? collapsing, colouration? ive heard of the candle method but really cant be too difinitive because it just looks like a shadow inside... any help would be appreciated... thanks

If the eggs collapse too early to be hatching then they are duds. Not necessarily infertile, but failed. Also discoloration (yellow, green, blueish) and any mold on the eggs. Candling is a good method too but if you tried that than these are going to be your indicators.

Look for veins, not shadows. If the eggs have veins, they're fertile. Also indenting doesn't mean they are bad, it could be that they need more humidity, try adding some water to the substrate. I'll go with mold probably means they're bad, but I've hatched some pretty strange looking eggs over the years.
